With “Wild and Lonely,” Etheridge found herself exploring themes of her past, but with a new perspective. The song is about wanting to break out of routines and reach for the extraordinary—“an angry craving seeps into my skin,” she sings. Melissa explains, “that was like Old School Melissa. It’s fun for me to play with ‘me’ now, for 57-year-old Melissa to play with the angst. The whole song is about being on the road, being hungry, wanting.”

Paired with the title track, “Wild and Lonely” fully sets the tone for the album, sonically and emotionally. She continues, “I wanted the album to have a sound, a feel,” she says. ‘Wild and Lonely’ really dialed that in for me…the song is a perfect example of the sound I wanted.”

For this new album, her 15th studio recording, Etheridge was reunited with celebrated producer John Shanks (Keith Urban, Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson), and the music was recorded largely live in studio, capturing the raw emotion of the material.
